WORKING AS A SUPERVISOR: Ethics, Consent & Documentation


A. OVERVIEW: Supervision is a distinct professional service with its own ethical responsibilities, documentation expectations, and potential liability. This advanced specialty ethics module explores practical approaches to the consent, contracting, documentation, and professional responsibilities unique to supervision.


We'll discuss examples from supervision practice, explore different perspectives, and examine the ethical reasoning behind complex supervision decisions. This specialty module was developed by Dr. Dawn McBride and may be presented by Dawn, members of the Dawn Psychological Services training team, or both. Participants are encouraged to adapt what fits their own practice setting, regulatory standards, workplace policies, and professional judgment. Because every audience brings unique experiences and questions, each offering evolves naturally; however, topics commonly explored include:


✔ Developing supervision agreements and informed consent

✔ Clarifying roles, expectations, boundaries, and accountability throughout the supervisory relationship

✔ Documentation practices that support ethical supervision and continuity of…
